This really cannot be overstated, for even multi-billion-dollar revenue companies can suddenly find themselves digging an early grave through failure to embrace strategy excellence. It is no secret that over the last decade consumers have turned to online shopping, but for retailers with heavy investment in bricks and mortar, having a clear strategy to address the rise of online shopping and omnichannel retail has been a necessary condition for success, if not actual survival. High Street casualties over the last few years bear witness to this.

Focus on strong leadership
However, strategy excellence will only really be achieved with strong leadership. When there is lack of clarity about the purpose of the change management project, weakness or lack of commitment to the direction taken, resistance from employees can ensue, creating a lack of trust in the people taking control of a particular area or task.
The programme should set clear objectives for each leader at every stage. Leaders who will ensure team members move through the process without friction.
Strong leadership will help create the cultural shift towards continuous improvement and excellence that must be embraced for ongoing success to be realised. Indeed, change is the only constant when striving for strategy excellence. The desire to implement and review change on a constant basis is something that successful organisations must instil in their team members – and it will be down to senior managers and leaders to ensure it is achieved.
