Engaging your entire workforce in strategy excellence.

Nadège Grall, Marketing Manager at Renault-Nissan Consulting shares the reasons why strategy excellence should be embraced by your entire organisation.

For any organisation operating in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing global marketplace, ignoring strategy excellence can prove fatal. A poor strategy can destroy a business. Conversely, a good strategy that’s executed poorly can be equally damaging to customers, reputation and profitability alike.
Excellence is the only option when it comes to strategy. This really cannot be overstated, for even multi-billion-dollar revenue companies can suddenly find themselves digging an early grave through failure to embrace strategy excellence. The retail sector in particular has faced major challenges in the past few years.

It is no secret that over the last decade consumers have turned to online shopping, but for retailers with heavy investment in bricks and mortar, having a clear strategy to address the rise of online shopping and omnichannel retail has been a necessary condition for success, if not actual survival. High Street casualties over the last few years bear witness to this.

The lesson is clear and simple. In order to succeed today, organisations need to invest in change, aided by a strategy excellence improvement programme to enable and facilitate management of that change. If not, they risk losing relevancy in an unforgiving marketplace.

Why your organisation needs a change management strategy

However, change is not a one-size-fits-all. Every organisation, based on factors such as its culture, maturity and market conditions will need to address change in its own way to ensure that the desired results are achieved.

Moreover, change impacts your number one asset – your people - and how they carry out their roles. As such, change can suffer from slow adoption and low utilisation if your team are not engaged with or are resistant to that change.

A strategy excellence programme will help to ensure that everyone involved, understands the critical reasons why change is necessary and the role they play in achieving that change. It will also ensure that a transparent, top-down approach is utilised.

Strategy excellence for change management

Organisational change can be incredibly disruptive without a defined strategy excellence initiative in place to guide the transformation. The most effective change management strategies are those that focus on employees, as they will have the biggest impact on both the short and long-term success of your business improvement project.

The starting point

To begin, your programme will need to ensure that your organisation has a clear vision for change. This is often referred to as “True North”, and it is this that your whole organisation will be working towards as you embark on your change management initiative. Without knowing precisely in which direction your True North lies, uncertainty can take hold, in effect sealing the fate of the initiative before it has even begun.

Construct your change management plan

Similarly, without a detailed roadmap in place that includes key objectives, goals, roles and areas of responsibility, it is unlikely your team will fully understand the tasks assigned to them, rendering your efforts to move towards your True North ineffectual.  Organisations should utilise tools and techniques such as Policy Deployment (Hoshin Kanri), V-MOST (Vision, Mission, Objectives, Strategies and Tactics) and Visual Management to build their change management plans and to ensure they remain on-track during implementation.

Focus on strong leadership

However, strategy excellence will only really be achieved with strong leadership. When there is lack of clarity about the purpose of the change management project, weakness or lack of commitment to the direction taken, resistance from employees can ensue, creating a lack of trust in the people taking control of a particular area or task.

The programme should set clear objectives for each leader at every stage. Leaders who will ensure team members move through the process without friction.

Strong leadership will help create the cultural shift towards continuous improvement and excellence that must be embraced for ongoing success to be realised. Indeed, change is the only constant when striving for strategy excellence. The desire to implement and review change on a constant basis is something that successful organisations must instil in their team members – and it will be down to senior managers and leaders to ensure it is achieved.
